KATHERINE C.
is the kind of student who is always eager to learn something new. At 11 years old, she brings curiosity, dedication, and a positive attitude to everything she does, both inside and outside the dojo.
Katherine first started karate because her father wanted her to learn self-defense. She is now a green belt and over her time training she built real friendships with classmates like Emily P, Emily B, Jessie, SofiaNicole, Jane, Zoe, Alexa, and Youngia. She especially enjoys the precision of katas, learning takedowns, and the excitement of nunchuck training. Her hard work has even earned her two gold medals and one bronze medal at our biannual karate tournaments.
Outside of karate, Katherine keeps busy with a wide range of activities. She plays clarinet in her school band, is working toward her Bronze Medallion in swimming, enjoys golfing, and has recently started learning freestyle skiing. In her free time, she enjoys listening to Taylor Swift and K-pop, solving puzzles, spending time with friends, and attending live musicals. She could not be more well-rounded!
One of Katherine’s most impressive interests is her love of languages. She is currently learning five languages: Cantonese, Korean, Italian, Spanish, and French. Her goal is to become a polyglot one day, who can understand and communicate in many languages. She also enjoys learning about different countries and cultures and can type at an incredible speed of over 110 words per minute.
Katherine hopes to one day work in a science-related field, with dreams of becoming a cancer biologist, toxicologist, or nuclear engineer. With her strong work ethic, love of learning, and willingness to challenge herself, there is no stopping this Superkid from making a change in the world. Congratulations, Katherine!
WHAT’S NEW?
BRING FRIENDS AND FAMILY WEEK
Turned out AWESOME! Last month, we had a great turnout and so many students bring in their friends and family members! We’ll do it again soon! Checkout more pictures that were posted on our Instagram and Facebook.
WHAT STYLE OF KARATE ARE WE PRACTICING AT SUPERKIDS?
All the “KARATE” techniques and most of the katas are from the SHOTOKAN system. Sensei Kwong and Sensei Carter have also dabbled in Kung Fu, Tae Kwon- Do, Escrima/Arnis, Aikido, Jiu-jitsu, boxing and numerous years in Kickboxing. Many of the advanced kicks, blocks and throws are combinations of these different systems. A few good Martial Arts movies have also helped in developing his style (just joking).
The word karate is a combination of two Japanese characters: kara, meaning empty, and te, meaning hand; thus, karate means “empty hand.” Adding the suffix “-do” (pronounced “doe”), meaning “way,” i.e., karate-do, implies karate as a total way of life that goes well beyond the self-defense applications. In traditional karate-do, we always keep in mind that the true opponent is oneself.
