Sensei Carter Yong is beginning his journey to becoming the lead sensei at Superkids Karate. He is excited to follow in his father’s footsteps, Sensei Kwong Yong, and will strive to continue helping students be the best version of themselves through good discipline and confidence.
Sensei Carter has always been drawn to Martial Arts. At the young age of 3 years and 11 months, he asked his dad if he could enroll in Superkids Karate. Typically, students under 4 years old are considered too young to enroll. It is usually too difficult for young children to stay focused during the classes. Luckily Sensei Kwong humored his son and did a trial class with him. To his surprise, Sensei Carter exceeded expectations and he gave him the green light to join classes! Sensei Kwong emphasized that he needed to be more focused, disciplined, and try harder than any other student because he is the son of Sensei.
Over the next 15 years, Sensei Carter did just that by training at Superkids Karate a minimum of four times a week. Soon he became the youngest and sharpest student in the class! Sensei Carter received his black belt at age 11, and solidified himself as the youngest student to earn a black belt since the dojo opened in 1989. After graduating from Unionville High School in 2020, Sensei Carter moved downtown to pursue his Bachelor of Kinesiology degree at the University of Toronto. While studying in Toronto, he honed his training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing at different gyms, which added greatly to his extensive Martial Arts skillset. He also worked to improve his teaching ability by teaching karate at the local YMCA and basketball for the kids Junior Blues Program at U of T.
Sensei Carter has since completed his undergraduate degree, and is eager to begin the journey he had his sights set on since the age of 4!
He is more than excited to meet and learn every student’s name. Sensei Carter is dedicated to learning the nuances of what it takes to make a dojo that is disciplined, motivational, and of course fun… just like Sensei Kwong has done over the past 35 years!
