Every September, something shifts in Markham. The summer slows down, the backpacks come out, and families across York Region settle back into routines. New school years bring new teachers, new classrooms, and for many kids, a fresh start. It is also one of the most common times of year that parents walk through the doors of Superkids Karate for the first time.

And honestly? It makes perfect sense. September is not just a great time to start karate, for a lot of kids, it might be the best time to begin their martial arts journey. Here is why.

Ask most parents why they are interested in karate for their child and you will hear the same few things: focus, discipline, and confidence. These are not just marketing words. They are real skills that karate develops, and they happen to be exactly what teachers are asking of students at school. It is one of the reasons so many Markham families choose kids martial arts as their go-to after school activity when September rolls around.

Focus is built into every karate class. Students must listen carefully to instruction, remember sequences of techniques, and execute them with precision. That kind of active, concentrated attention sustained over an entire class trains the brain in a way that very few other activities do. Over time, kids who train karate regularly get genuinely better at paying attention, not just on the mat but anywhere they are asked to focus.

Discipline is developed through the structure of the class itself. Students bow when they enter and leave the mat. They address their instructors respectfully. They follow a clear set of expectations every single session. For younger kids especially, sometimes they will have off days where they do not feel like training, but they learn to still come in and put in a good effort anyway. This kind of consistent, structured environment builds habits that transfer directly into how they behave in a classroom.

Confidence grows in a way that is hard to replicate in most other activities. Every time a child lands a new technique, earns a stripe on their belt, or gets called up for a promotion, they walk away with tangible proof that their effort is paying off. That quiet sense of belief in themselves makes them more resilient, and it shows up in how they approach a difficult assignment, and how they carry themselves when things get hard.

And then there is the part that is not usually mentioned: it is actually fun. Kids are learning how to kick, punch, and use cool techniques. They are working with partners, earning new belts, and doing things that make them feel capable and strong. At Superkids Karate, we have always believed that if a child is not enjoying the journey, the rest of it does not matter. In our experience, most kids leave their first karate class already asking when they can come back. Some even ask to do more than one class a day to get some extra practice in.

One of the hardest parts of going back to school is re-establishing structure after a summer of freedom. Late nights, different summer camps every week, and two months away from the classroom can make that first week of September feel like a shock to the system — for both the kids and parents.

Adding karate classes to a child’s weekly routine in September does more than give them something to do after school. It gives them a rhythm, a commitment, a reason to show up, work hard, and carry that energy back into the classroom the next morning. At Superkids Karate, we have watched this play out hundreds of times over 37 years on McIntosh Drive. We’ve often found that kids who start martial arts training in September settle into their new routine quickly, because they are building discipline in the dojo and in the classroom.

For parents in Markham looking for after school activities that genuinely support their child’s development, kids martial arts is one of the few options where the benefits show up directly in the school day.

Over 37 years of teaching kids karate in Markham, some of the most meaningful moments at Superkids Karate have happened in the office when a parent pulls us aside to share something.

It goes something like this.

A parent enrols their child (often a boy or girl between the ages of 5 and 8) because they are struggling with their focus and behaviour. Not with karate, but with school. Maybe they are having a hard time sitting still. Maybe they are easily distracted, acting out in class, or their teacher has mentioned that focusing is a challenge. The parent is not sure what to do, but something told them to give karate a try.

A few months go by. Then one day the parent comes in and finds Sensei Kwong or Sensei Carter before or after class, and they tell us that something has changed. Their child is calmer at home and they are able to sit still and do work in the classroom. Their teachers have noticed a difference and reached out to the parent to say so. The same kid who was bouncing off the walls and distracting the class is now sitting at the front, paying attention, and becoming a model student.

We have heard versions of this story more times than we can count (take a look at our reviews to read some). And every single time, it still means the world to us.

Karate is not a substitute for professional support when a child needs it, and every child is different. But what we have seen again and again is that the structure, the physical outlet, the respect for instruction, and the sense of personal achievement that karate provides can have a quietly transformative effect on how a child shows up in every other part of their life. Sometimes kids do not need less energy, they just need somewhere to put it. The dojo becomes that place, and the classroom becomes calmer as a result.

At Superkids Karate, we teach students as young as five years old, and there is a reason we believe starting early matters. The habits children form between the ages of five and ten are the ones that tend to stick. Including how they respond to instruction, how they handle frustration, and how they approach learning something difficult. They become the foundation of who that child is as a student, as a teenager, and eventually as an adult.

When a child starts beginner karate or martial arts at five or six years old, they are not just learning how to kick and punch. They are learning how to listen, how to fail and get back up, and how to show up and be present in each class. They are building a relationship with discipline before school starts asking more of them. That head start matters enormously when the academic pressure begins to increase in later grades.

Parents across Markham, Richmond Hill, and Thornhill who start their children young often tell us the same thing years later: that enrolling in kids karate classes was one of the best decisions they made for their child’s development, and they wish they had started even earlier.

A new school year could mean new possibilities, new goals, and a desire to do better than last year. Channelling that energy into something structured and meaningful, like kids martial arts classes, sets the tone for the entire year ahead.

At Superkids Karate, September is one of our favourite times of year. The dojo fills up with new faces. Kids who are nervous and excited all at once, parents who are hopeful and a little curious. Within a few weeks, we start to see them settle in. The nerves give way to confidence. The unfamiliar techniques start to click. New friendships form in the dojo. And somewhere around week three or four, a child who walked in unsure of themselves starts to walk out with a little more confidence.

That is what September looks like on our mat here in Markham. And we would love for your child to be part of it this year.

His son, Sensei Carter, now teaches alongside him, carrying on that same philosophy for a new generation of Markham kids. Together, they’ve built something rare — a small, family-run dojo where every child is known by name, every milestone is celebrated, and every student is treated as an individual.

If you’re a parent in Markham, you’ve probably asked yourself at some point: how do I help my child believe in themselves? Maybe… your child is shy in social settings, struggling with focus at school, or just needs an outlet to grow. For hundreds of Markham families over the past 37 years, that answer has been karate.

At Superkids Karate, located in Markham on McIntosh Drive, we’ve watched countless children walk through our doors nervous and unsure, and a few months later they are standing taller, speaking up, and carrying themselves with a quiet confidence that surprises even their own parents. We’ve seen it happen over and over again since 1989, and it never gets old.

So how exactly does karate build confidence in kids? Here are five ways we’ve seen it happen every single week in our dojo.

It’s not about aggression; it’s about assurance in a confrontation. When a child knows they have the tools to handle a confrontational situation, they stop being afraid of them.

Over the past 37 years, Superkids Karate has seen a shift in how kids grow up in Markham, Ontario. From 1990 to the mid 2000s, Sensei Kwong would hear stories from his students about fights and school bullies. As the years went on, the number of school fights and confrontations in York Region schools decreased. It is good that this is happening as it means school violence is decreasing, but it also means that many kids don’t get as much experience dealing with difficult situations and conflict. While no one wants children getting into fights, learning how to handle pressure, standing up for yourself, and staying calm when things get uncomfortable are important life skills.

Many children growing up in Markham are fortunate to be raised in a safe and supportive community. However, as they get older, they’ll eventually face challenges, disagreements, competition, and difficult people. Many parents are looking at karate in Markham because it gives kids a chance to experience those situations in a safe and controlled environment. Through sparring and training, they learn what it feels like to be challenged, how to stay composed under pressure, and how to keep trying when things don’t go their way. These lessons help build confidence that extends far beyond the dojo and prepares them for the challenges they’ll face throughout life.

Public presentations are consistently ranked as one of the most common fears among adults. The good news? It’s a skill that can be developed early; and karate is one of the best places to start.

In our kid’s karate classes, students regularly practice kata, a series of movements and techniques that they must remember and perform on their own. At tournaments, they step into the ring by themselves and perform in front of parents, judges, teammates, and spectators. For many children; that’s a little intimidating at first, but that’s where the growth happens.

Over time and practice, students learn to manage their nerves, stay focused, and trust in the hard work they’ve put into their training. They learn to adapt and get used to the nerves they feel when presenting in public. These experiences help children develop real confidence that carries over into everyday life. Whether it’s giving a presentation at school, trying out for a team, performing in a concert, or eventually interviewing for a job, the ability to stay calm and perform under pressure is a skill they’ll use for years to come.

That’s one of the many reasons parents choose martial arts for children; not just to learn self-defence, but to build confidence and life skills that last a lifetime.

Team sports are wonderful, but they aren’t the right fit for every child. For kids who feel like they can’t keep up, worry about letting teammates down, or struggle to find their place in a group dynamic, the pressure of a team environment can quietly erode their confidence rather than build it.

Karate is different. It is an individual sport at its core and your progress is your own, your achievements are your own, and you are never relying on someone else to have a good day for you to succeed. At the same time, training at Superkids Karate means being surrounded by peers who are on their own journey, cheering each other on rather than competing for a starting spot. Kids build genuine friendships in the dojo, but without the anxiety of feeling like they are dragging the team down. For many children in Markham, karate ends up being the first sport or activity where they truly feel like they belong and that sense of belonging is where real confidence begins. Whether your child is naturally competitive or simply wants to grow at their own pace, children’s karate classes at Superkids give every student the space to shine on their own terms.

Confidence rarely arrives all at once. It’s built piece by piece, through small moments of achievement that add up over time. In karate, those moments happen all the time, like when a student lands a new kick for the first time, finally nails a technique that took weeks of practice, stepping up to earn a new belt, or wins a medal at a tournament.

What makes these milestones so powerful is that they are entirely earned. There are no shortcuts in karate. You can’t charm your way to a higher belt or coast through on natural talent alone. Every achievement is the direct result of effort, focus, and showing up. When a child at Superkids Karate gets called up for their next belt promotion, they walk away feeling like all the training they did, is paying off and they are capable of achieving what they set their minds to. That belief doesn’t just stay in the dojo. It follows them into the classroom, into friendships, and into every challenge life puts in front of them.

This is one of the things that makes karate for kids in Markham such a meaningful after school activity. Unlike many other programs, the progress in karate is visible, personal, and entirely their own. Every new belt and every new technique mastered is a reminder that hard work pays off; a lesson that stays with them long after they’ve left the mat.

Confidence isn’t built by avoiding failure — it’s built by learning what to do after it. Karate puts kids face to face with failure on a regular basis, and that’s exactly the point. One thing that both Sensei Kwong and Sensei Carter say is, “you have to learn how to win and learn how to lose”.

A new technique won’t come on the first try. A sparring partner will score a point. A mistake may be made during your kata. In each of these moments, students at Superkids Karate learn to get up, refocus, and go at it again with Sensei Kwong and Sensei Carter right there guiding them through it. Over time, falling down stops feeling like defeat and starts feeling like part of the process. That mindset is one of the most valuable things karate gives a child. Kids who learn perseverance on the mat become teenagers who don’t quit when a subject at school gets tough, and adults who don’t turn away when life gets hard.

Over 37 years later, that belief hasn’t changed.

His son, Sensei Carter, now teaches alongside him, carrying on that same philosophy for a new generation of Markham kids. Together, they’ve built something rare — a small, family-run dojo where every child is known by name, every milestone is celebrated, and every student is treated as an individual.
